What You Need to Know Before You Buy a GPS Navigation System

If you're ready to fold up that old atlas you've stuffed beneath the front seat of your car and trade it in for a GPS navigation system, you're not alone. It seems like everyone's buying one these days. Finding one that will fit your budget and your travel plans, however, can be tough. That's why I'm here-to fill you in on all you need to know about buying a system of your own.

Although most GPS navigation systems are loaded down with a ton of awesome features, they all perform the same basic function: showing you where you are and letting you know how to get to where you want to be. If you're trying to make it to Albuquerque, or just mapping out the best route to your favorite coffee shop, a GPS would tell you exactly how to get there.

GPS systems also come with a selection of pre-programmed destinations, called Points of Interest (POIs). They also all operate with a touch screen interface which allows you to choose icons or type text, simply with the tip of your finger.

Since all GPS systems do the same thing, it's really only the extra features that make choosing one such a confusing task.

Now that you know what they do, we'll discuss which brands you might want to consider.

I'd suggest sticking with the top three brands, Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. While there are several other companies who sell quality systems, it's sometimes best to stick with a company you know will always be around if you have trouble with your purchase.

In possession of almost 50% of the total market, Garmin is, without a doubt, the most popular choice. They offer a wide selection of products available at all price levels. You can purchase a basic Garmin nuvi 200 for less than $150. If you really want the best, you can purchse the 880 model, but it will cost you close to $1,000.

Coming up in second place is Tom Tom. They also offer a variety of products, but with very competitive prices. For instance, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition costs as much as Garmin's basic nuvi 200, but is stocked with a ton of awesome features that would only be available in Garmin's more expensive models.

There's also Magellan, one of the original companies to manufacture GPS navigation systems. Their Maestro series is especially cool and relatively cheap, with prices ranging anywhere form $150 to $350. They offer a lot of cool features, like their AAA deal, which allows customers to have access to AAA's Tour Book in their device. It is, of course, available to AAA members only.

If you're terrible at taking directions, or just really want to own the latest and greatest of GPS navigation systems, I'd suggest doing some research of your own to find out more about the current products and their prices.
